FAQ

CHROMATTETM & CHROMAFLEXTM

What are the lowest and brightest lighting conditions that will begin to have an affect on keying results?

In a low lit environment the LiteRing will provide sufficient light to achieve a good keys. A blue or green LiteRing may, as your only light source, cast its light on the subject, which may not be desirable. This can usually be rectified using a key or fill light on your subject/object.

Chromatte will not work as well in very bright shooting environments where the level of other light sources overpower and neutralise the effect of the LiteRing. The retro reflective action between the LiteRing and the aluminum coated micro glass beads is needed to achieve satisfactory keying results.

Can Chromatte be used outside?

Yes - but subject to the ratio of ambient lighting to the intensity of the LiteRing being sufficient to generate a key. The material is made using 100% natural cotton and is not suitable for using in wet conditions.

Does Chromatte fade in UV sunlight?

Not during regular use, if it were left outside for lengthy periods (which is not recommended) then it may fade over time.

How durable is Chromatte?

When hung in a dedicated studio space it will last for years. If walked on it is subject to usual wear and tear and possible tearing. Dust is most likely to affect the ability of Chromatte to key properly obstructing the reflectivity potential of the beads hence absorbing more of the LiteRing source than is ideal.

How do I best care for Chromatte?

Ideal handling advice is to hang it and not fold it though you can use a cool non-steam iron on the reverse if required. (NB: A benefit of Chromatte is that it can handle creases.) If it is to be stored then it should be rolled up and kept in a dust free container. Store above 5 degrees and below 25 degrees, in a cool and dry environment. Use a soft 'clothing type' brush to remove any dust marks.

At what angle does Chromatte stop working?

Where traditional blue screen solutions limit the ability to move the camera, the combination of the LiteRing and the retro-reflectivity of the material means that the camera can move from 90 degrees head on to up to 5 degrees from horizontal.

What methods should I use to join the Chromatte material?

Where the fabric is purchased on its own we reccommend it is hung in vertical panels running in the same direction rather than running several meters horizontally or in different directions.

Can it work if torn?

If you make every effort to close the tear and not leave a hole then yes. A tear or hole can be patched without any significant reduction in quality.

Is Chromatte fire retardant?

Rather than be treated to be fireproof it has been manufactured to be non-flammable. A NAMAS certificate can be provided with more information.

What is the difference between Chromatte and standard front projection screen?

Chromatte is designed to return the source light on the same axis as it enters the fabric - whilst it can be used to project an image on to (for instance as a guide when working within virtual sets) it is not designed specifically as a projection screen.

COMPATIBILITY

What third party products can Chromatte be used with?

Chromatte is platform independent and will work as a chroma key background for use within any software or hardware keying solution. We are currently compiling a list of suitable chroma key devices that we recommend for use.

LITERING TM

What is the optimum working distance between the Chromatte™ and LiteRing?

With a subject in-between it can work at a minimum of 2m and up to 20m away

When should I use a green or blue LiteRing?

This depends solely on the clashing of blue or green that is required in the foreground. There might be a visually aesthetic preference to a blue or green backdrop. As Digital Video (DV) cameras compress the video signal it has been found easier to use green when using these types of camera.

How big are the LiteRings and what lenses do they fit?

There are currently 2 sizes available, one to suit DV cameras and one to suit professional camera lenses.. See ‘LiteRing Top Sheet’ in Downloads section for a printable fact sheet.

What is the lifespan of the LiteRing L.E.D’s?

Depends on usage and at what level of intensity but realistically several years.

If one L.E.D. blows does it need replacing?

No. Nor if 2 blow but anymore and it will affect the levels of light emitted and therefore keying results. Spare L.E.D’s can be supplied and LiteRings can be refurbished if required.
